What a good read. Thank you The Pillar for doing this work and thank God! As a recent Catholic convert in Scandinavia I thank you. You are in my prayers!
This is really great, thank you for sharing this. The photo of Nidaros Cathedral is so striking - I proposed to my wife in front of that beautiful Cathedral, visiting her great grandmother's hometown of Trondheim. Would love to return (and now meet the bishop!)
I finished reading Kristin Lavransdatter a couple months ago with Well-Read Mom. All through this interview my heart kept leaping as I ran into Nidaros! Trondheim! Saint Olaf! It really brought home to me that Undset was truly illustrating the history of Catholic Norway and its spirituality.
Knowing nothing else about Norway, I highly recommend that book as a starting point!
An outstanding piece. Thank you so much for searching out someone whom I would never encounter except for the Pillar. I am using old technology today to print this interview and gently touch the words to better make present a thoughtful spirituality. To paraphrase a quote from a James Taylor song 'when this old world starts getting me down' I will remember that for all its problems and at times inconsistencies, our Church, the Body of Christ, is a remarkable gathering that still produces wonder filled men and women who encourage the rest of us on the Journey. I am most optimistic for our future. Terrance Glamp
Welp, kinda feels like I have no choice but to pray that this man might somehow be elected Pope. As much as he might hate the idea, he is top-notch papabile, zero question.

Thank you, Luke. The Pillar is a treasure.
The calm and intelligence exhibited here are very inspiring. Something we all need to strive for!
"I suppose the question is whether overcoming one’s ego would count as spiritual progress."
Superb! We've come to regard the psychological as if it is the same as the spiritual
